Council discusses early issues after Rumpke takes over trash collection

Councilmembers and staff spent part of the meeting reviewing the first week of service under Rumpke, the city's new sanitation contractor. Several members reported missed recycling and special pickups and described data that did not transfer from the previous vendor, Mid Ohio.
Steve, speaking for the city, said the city has had regular touch-base calls with Rumpke and that, while there have been "some misses in numbers" and other hiccups, Rumpke has been responsive to correcting mistakes. "We've had no major issues," he said, while acknowledging residents' frustrations and that some curbside or special-pickup information did not transfer fully from Mid Ohio. Steve added that the city will work with the law director and Rumpke to clarify documentation requirements for ADA curbside accommodations and will post a public message after confirming those requirements to avoid mixed guidance.
Council members sought clarity on whether special pickups require re-registration and asked that the city post information once requirements are confirmed. The city will continue weekly calls with the contractor and follow up with households that reported missed service.
