Board adopts District of Innovation amendments, seeks flexibility on certification and vaping discipline

Dr. Tinsley outlined specific changes intended to give the district additional local flexibility: allowing certified teachers (except those in special education) to teach outside their subject-area certification when appropriately trained; extending probationary contracts to three years for experienced teachers who meet a "5 of 8" rule; and changing disciplinary options for student vaping so administrators may use ISS or OSS rather than automatic DAEP placement in some first-offense situations.
"This came out of House Bill 1842," Dr. Tinsley said, summarizing the legal basis for DOI options. Trustees discussed the rationale for each exemption, implementation details, and how the district would maintain training and quality when assigning teachers outside their certified fields. The board voted to approve the DOI plan as written.
