Florence council unanimously votes to form Youth Alliance Committee to tackle juvenile issues

Florence Township Council voted unanimously on July 8 to establish a Youth Alliance Committee aimed at coordinating mentorship, extracurricular access and community-based supports for young people.

Council President Joseph Frappolli asked residents interested in volunteering to share contact information; Councilmember Talaya Loftin moved to create the committee and Councilmember John Fratinardo seconded the motion. The roll call vote was unanimous: Fratinardo, Frederick Gabriele, Loftin, Gina Sullivan and Frappolli voting yes. Councilmembers Gina Sullivan and Talaya Loftin agreed to serve on the committee.

The committee follows a lengthy special work session in which school officials, parents, clergy, law enforcement and new community groups described a range of problems and potential remedies. Participants proposed mentorship programs, rotating events across town to address transportation gaps, better cross-posting of events between schools and Recreation, and outreach via platforms youth use.

The motion created a volunteer advisory group rather than a binding ordinance; Council did not assign a budget or set an implementation schedule at the meeting. Council members and speakers repeatedly framed the committee as a first step to coordinate volunteers, schools, churches and civic groups to design programs and identify potential funding and logistics.

Next steps were left informal at the meeting: Council asked volunteers to submit contact details so the Council could convene initial organizers and scope the committee’s responsibilities.
