The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board voted to authorize the superintendent and general counsel to execute a purchase agreement with Dawanna Hamilton to acquire 863 East McKinley Street for $13,000.
Public commenter James Feeney said he supported the purchase and urged the board to consider acquiring additional vacant parcels adjacent to McKinley Elementary and Buchanan campus to protect green space from potential apartment development. "I support this item and the purchase of any other vacant property near McKinley High School," Feeney said, and cautioned the board to learn from prior parcel acquisitions that did not result in long-term district control.
Board member Mr. Godet said the current purchase is tied to the broader tax-plan project and urged the board to consider dedicating future sale proceeds or including similar parcels in future tax-plan projects so the district can act strategically to preserve campus buffers. The motion to approve the purchase was made, seconded and carried.
