Mission CISD board approves Eureka Math for K–5 after HB 1605 review

At its Aug. 14 meeting the Mission CISD Board of Trustees approved the district purchase and rollout of Eureka Math for kindergarten through fifth grade. Laquanta Bivens-Hernandez, elementary math coordinator, told trustees Eureka Math is currently the only K–5 material on the State Board of Education's approved list and explained the curriculum's emphasis on focused TEKS-aligned modules, fluency practice, conceptual development and teacher lesson internalization.
Bivens-Hernandez described teacher supports and implementation logistics: initial lesson plans and videos for teacher preparation, printed student "learn books" and practical workbooks supplied to campuses, and plans for end-of-module checks rather than traditional reporting-period tests. She explained that House Bill 1605 changed the district's instructional-material selection process (IMRA) and that HB 1605-funded allotments provide additional per-student dollars for districts using State Board–approved HQIM. Dr. Cris Valdez said materials were available online and campuses received hard copies to start the year.
Trustee Veronica "Betty" R. Mendoza moved to approve the purchase of the elementary math curriculum (item pulled from consent for discussion); the motion was seconded and passed unanimously, recorded as 6-0.
