Mission CISD opens 2024–25 school year, welcomes more than 13,000 students

Interim Superintendent Dr. Cris Valdez told the Board of Trustees at its Aug. 14 meeting that the district successfully opened the 2024–25 school year and "we're excited to welcome over 13,000 children to their schoolhouses." She thanked teachers, principals, maintenance, operations and business-office staff for the start-of-year work.
District staff summarized professional learning provided during end-of-summer sessions: secondary teachers preparing to teach the new Science TEKS, Pre-K staff trained by the Children's Learning Institute, bilingual staff studying the Gómez & Gómez dual-language enrichment model, and fine-arts and health/physical-education staff who participated in workshops on instructional techniques and wellness. Dr. Valdez said those trainings are part of a district emphasis on teacher growth to boost student learning outcomes.
The board also recognized a $600 gift from Mission CISD alumnus Jay Villegas, vice president of Frontier Air Conditioning, who "is generously donating $200.00 to each of the campuses he attended" (O'Grady Elementary, Kenneth White Jr. High and Mission High School). Trustees and the superintendent publicly thanked Mr. Villegas when he presented checks to campus principals.
