The Nederland Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously Aug. 19 to adopt the district's 2024–25 budget and a combined property tax rate of $0.9669.
Melissa J. Wong, the district business manager, presented the proposed tax rates and budget and said the district is proposing an M&O rate of $0.7369 and an I&S rate of $0.23 for a combined total of $0.9669, "which is a decrease from the prior year of $0.03 (three cents)." The board then approved the motion to adopt the tax rate and the budget by vote of 7–0.
Wong told the board that certified property values increased by approximately 13.22%, with the largest increases in residential property, and that the combined rate will affect maintenance-and-operations taxes on a $100,000 home by about $38.70. Board members framed the rate change differently in discussion: Trustee Micah Mosley said it was "effectively a 3-cent reduction in the combined rate and the lowest District tax rate in approximately 20 years," while the formal motion recorded in the minutes described the adoption as an increase in the rate (the minutes state, in motion language, an effective 10.87% increase). The minutes record both statements; the board voted unanimously to adopt the figures presented.
The budget was presented in the required fund-function-object format and was approved after the board thanked the business office for its work. The board's adoption concludes the budget and tax-rate steps necessary to set district finances for the 2024–25 school year.
