Council overrules Airport Land Use Commission and approves Little Italy hotel site permit

The City Council voted to overrule the Airport Land Use Commission (ALUC) determination of inconsistency and approved a site-development permit for a proposed Little Italy project at 2345 Kettner Boulevard.
Development Services staff reviewed the applicant’s density calculations and recommended an overall finding that the proposed intensity was compatible with surrounding blocks. Staff noted Caltrans had provided an advisory letter concurring with ALUC’s determination of inconsistency but maintained sufficient evidence supported the council resolution to overrule. The Planning Commission later recommended overruling by a 5–0 vote and the Downtown Community Planning Council also supported the project.
Applicant representatives said the project had neighborhood support and emphasized compatibility with surrounding intensity. Downtown CPC chair Manny Rodriguez told council the planning council voted unanimously to support the proposed overrule and called the project reasonable for the neighborhood. Councilmembers who supported the motion noted prior similar overrides and cited surrounding block intensity in justifying the decision. The council recorded the final vote as passing with the required supermajority.
