Council backs Unite Here Local 30 in hospitality contract dispute, passes supportive resolution

The City Council on Sept. 17 voted unanimously to adopt a resolution expressing support for fair negotiations between Unite Here Local 30 and hotel employers, following testimony from hotel employees and union representatives describing economic pressure and long negotiations.
Brian Elliott, representing Council President Pro Tem LaCava, introduced the measure and framed it as a statement about workers’ rights: "This resolution affirms your commitment to workers involved in the current labor dispute and that they reach a just resolution," he said. Several union members described daily sacrifices on the picket lines; Rosa Carrillo, a Hilton Bayfront worker, told the council the cost of living and housing has made one job insufficient for many families.
Councilmembers spoke in strong support of the workers. Council Member Foster, who moved the item, said the resolution was about members, not union leadership, and urged hotels to return to the bargaining table. Council Member Von Wilpert and others reported visiting picket lines and sanctioned individual contributions to strike funds. The council recorded a unanimous 7-0 vote in favor (two absences noted).
