CRA staff presented a transit package that included funding for new, larger, solar‑powered bus shelters and an interlocal agreement to continue downtown trolley service during season. Melanie Long, presenting for the CRA, said the shelters would be a new ‘‘interlude arch’’ design with benches, ad boxes and solar power; the CRA contribution was $25,000 per shelter and staff proposed nine sites for the current fiscal year with additional locations possible next year.
"We're contributing $25,000 per bus shelter," Long said. She told commissioners the CRA had budgeted $300,000 for the program this year and that shelters could display rotating marketing materials in coordination with Leetran. Commissioners asked about ridership, integration with Edison Avenue improvements and cost‑effectiveness; staff said ridership has dropped recently and that they will explore on‑demand options such as Freebee and pursue FDOT grant offsets for the trolley.
The board approved the shelter funding and the trolley interlocal by voice vote and asked staff to return with additional site details and any ridership/cost per‑rider analysis. Staff indicated that shelters would be prioritized where right‑of‑way exists and that further sites would be considered next fiscal year.
