Pilot Point ISD awards Child Nutrition contract to Chartwells after competitive bid

The Pilot Point Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved a Child Nutrition contract with Chartwells on June 15 following a staff recommendation and competitive bid process.

CFO Brittany Floyd said a five-person district committee reviewed and scored bids and submitted the scores and final tabulation to the Texas Department of Agriculture for review and approval; the contract had also been reviewed by TDA counsel and the district's attorney. Representatives Joan Thorne and Peter Pajak of Chartwells — part of Compass Group — presented a plan emphasizing increased participation, an elevated culinary experience, technology and student engagement programs, and systems for health, safety and TEA compliance. Board President Renee Polk raised concerns about "unfulfilled promises, poor food quality, and not preparing enough food to serve all students" based on past vendor experiences; Joan Thorne responded that Chartwells was "committed to proving themselves," noting successes in neighboring districts.

Trustee Craig Bickers moved and Trustee Mandy Kirby seconded approval of the contract; the motion passed 6-0.
