Utilities present options for historic IMAG water tank: $8M restoration or $1.25M demolition

Assistant Director Jason Chandra reviewed the IMAG (IMAX) 200,000-gallon storage tank, noting it was built in 1936 and no longer meets current building standards. A Black & Veatch study from 2020 outlined options ranging from historic preservation and structural strengthening to demolition.
Chandra described the cost delta: restoring the historic tower to meet modern standards would cost "about $8,000,000," while demolition was estimated at roughly "$1,250,000." The utility noted the tank has been isolated from the distribution system since 2020 and that more recent distribution storage (Tree Line tank, Winkler tank) reduces operational need for the tower. Staff said demolition funding is available in the FY26 budget but recommended further discussions with IMAG about historic and marketing value before deciding whether to keep, restore, or remove the structure.
