Superintendent highlights AP gains, teacher pipeline and Deaf Awareness program

"What a great start to the new school year!" Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo told trustees at the Sept. 12 board meeting as he outlined several district highlights. He said 61 Nacogdoches High School students earned AP Scholar honors last year — an increase of 19 from 2023 — and credited work occurring at the elementary and middle school levels for preparing students for those outcomes.
Trujillo outlined an internal pathway to increase teacher staffing: ten district paraprofessionals are part of the district's first Teachworthy cohort, a pathway that pairs NISD with Indiana Wesleyan University to allow staff to earn bachelor’s degrees and certification while working. He said program expenses are covered in part by the district partnership and by supplemental salary support for participating staff.
Trujillo also noted infrastructure and program items: completion of several summer construction projects, a pending installation of safety netting behind the south end zone at Dragon Stadium to allow band and drill-team seating closer to the home side, and NISD's role as a Regional Day School Program for the Deaf serving 21 East Texas districts. He thanked Kayla Hughes and the deaf-education team for their work supporting students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Trujillo said he and district staff are continuing coordination with community partners and legislators on school funding and safety issues.
