Horry County’s zoning board granted a 15-foot front-setback variance allowing additions, a front porch and a carport at 2938 Highway 129. Staff noted the house was built in 1962 and that the county changed rural residential setback standards on Jan. 4, 2022, increasing the front setback from 25 to 40 feet.
Applicant Jody Squires told the board the home has been in the family for generations and provided letters of support from surrounding neighbors. Board members asked whether the applicant could move the addition back to match the existing face of the structure; Squires said moving it would disrupt the intended appearance. A motion to approve passed with a majority of votes in favor.
The approval allows the family to pursue building permits for the proposed additions, subject to standard staff conditions.
