The Cayuga County Legislature voted May 26 to enact Local Law No. 1 of 2026, creating an exception to the state residency requirement for the county’s Chief Assistant County Attorney, Senior Assistant County Attorney, and Assistant County Attorney. The local law allows those positions to be filled by residents of Cayuga County or any other county in New York State; the Legislature said preference may still be given to Cayuga residents.
The measure was introduced during a public hearing opened by Chair Jonathan Anna and carried by motion of Robert Shea with a second from McNabb‑Coleman. The local law cites Municipal Home Rule authority and explicitly references Public Officers Law §3 in describing the change. The law takes effect upon filing with the New York State Secretary of State, as stated in the enacted text.
