Council discusses raising short-term rental cap and finds low Transient Lodging Tax compliance

City Manager Andrea Rogers told the council May 21 that staff propose raising the city's short-term rental cap from 7% to 10% because many neighborhoods have reached the existing limit. Projects Coordinator Colleen Coleman said staff are obtaining transient lodging tax data through an intergovernmental agreement with the Department of Revenue and reported that only 12 of the city's 36 short-term rental properties are currently paying the tax.
Council set the short-term rental ordinance amendment for future consideration (tentatively June 18) and directed staff to identify all short-term rental properties and issue registration notices within 60 days after ordinance passage. Staff will present a proposed registration and enforcement approach at a subsequent meeting.
