Nutter Fort approves budgeted purchase of police cruiser amid staffing constraints

Police Chief Ron Godwin told the Town of Nutter Fort Council on June 11 that department cruisers are overdue for replacement and that the 2012 vehicle "is being stripped of equipment and striping." He said there is money already set aside in the budget for at least one replacement and that congressional funds for an additional vehicle "may still come through." Chief Godwin recommended ordering one vehicle now while a second replacement could wait until hiring improves.
Councilor Charlene Louk moved to proceed with the already budgeted purchase of a cruiser; Councilor Karen Phillips seconded the motion and it carried unanimously. Chief Godwin said acquisition and outfitting of a replacement cruiser and its equipment will take months and that the department is also updating internal policing procedures related to new tasers, body-worn cameras and evidence handling.
