The council authorized the city to apply for an Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership grant to help fund construction of Beacon Park, and left a $50,000 community‑service agreement with the Freshwater Land Trust on consent.
Mayor James D. Stewart Jr. said Beacon Park design is nearly complete and that estimated construction costs are about $3,000,000. He told the council the federal grant program offers awards commonly in the $3 million to $15 million range with a 20/80 match and said the city intends to apply potentially for the full construction amount. Separately, a $50,000 agreement with the Freshwater Land Trust will support Cahaba River maintenance and bank restoration; the mayor said broader bank‑restoration work could total about $250,000 and the Freshwater Land Trust funds are intended to offset that cost.
Both items were left on consent and approved when the council passed the consent agenda at the end of the meeting.
