Council advances $4.13 million Civic Center exterior 'reskinning' after envelope review

The City Council on Aug. 6 approved on consent a change order authorizing up to $4,130,601.23 for reskinning and replacement of exterior walls at the Irondale Civic Center after a building-envelope consultant recommended the work.
Mayor James D. Stewart Jr. said the consultant determined there were issues behind the existing walls that required more-than-superficial repairs; the recommended approach is to remove and replace exterior sections so the building will meet current codes and avoid repeated repairs. "They will remove a section, repair it, remove a section, repair it," the mayor said, describing the phased approach intended to keep the renovation moving while ensuring thorough repairs.
City staff described the estimate as conservative and said the project will be paid from the PBA funds allocated to the Civic Center renovation. Council members asked about schedule impacts; staff said the reskinning will probably add about seven to nine months to the project timeline but would allow work to continue in other areas. The item was left on the consent agenda and was included in the consent‑agenda approval that concluded the meeting.
