Several Irondale residents urged the City Council on Aug. 6 to address safety and quality‑of‑life problems on 2nd Avenue, including recent thefts, heavy truck traffic and insufficient street lighting.
Heather McElroy told the council her electric bicycle was stolen and said the neighborhood’s “street is becoming unsafe,” adding that semi trucks and drivers ignoring signs are causing damage and putting children at risk. Joelle O'Day said sidewalks and gutters are in poor condition and that, in her view, there is “no police protection up on 2nd Avenue.” Teacher Katie Gallas echoed those concerns, saying the area includes babies and young children and urging “more streetlight, more of a police presence.”
Presiding officer offered to follow up directly with residents after the meeting and provided a staff contact for case follow-up. The council did not take formal action on the public comments during the meeting; members said they would meet with residents off the dais to discuss next steps. The council approved its consent agenda later in the evening, which did not include a direct funding item tied specifically to 2nd Avenue repairs or lighting.
