Commissioner urges measures after emergency response hindered at Salazar Field

Commissioner Baltazar told the commission that a recent medical emergency at Salazar Field was complicated by vehicles parked along the south-side drive between the baseball fields and the high school property, which limited access for emergency equipment and created no turnaround point for large apparatus. “There was a medical emergency that occurred in Salazar Field last week where it required emergency services to perform,” Baltazar said, adding that vehicles parked on both sides left too little room for response.
Baltazar suggested designating a minimum of six no-parking spaces to preserve an emergency turnaround and discussed providing gate access or keys to first responders. Public works director Lauren Catell said staff would look into the incident, confirm whether the fire department has keys and consider options such as chaining and controlled access, and that staff may ask follow-up questions to determine the quickest access method. No formal motion was made; the commission requested staff follow up.
