Recreation manager says city readying pools and staff for expanded summer programming

Austin (introduced in the agenda as 'Austin, Georgia, recreation manager') gave the commission a detailed recreation update focused on aquatics staffing and senior services. “Once all the new staff are hired, plus everybody returning from college, we'll have about 25 aquatic staff,” he said, explaining that the number includes lifeguards, instructors and senior lifeguards.
He reported that the competition pool will have a valve replaced this week as the final major pool project before summer and that six certified pool operators were trained at a recent aquatic facility operator course attended by operators from Elk Grove and Nevada. Austin reviewed planned summer programming starting the week of June 9 (expanded lap lanes, swim hours, swim lessons, recreational swims, pool parties and swim meets).
On senior programming, Austin said the senior club will host monthly summer ice-cream socials with guest speakers and continue regular programs including bingo, sewing, congregate dining and meals on wheels. He noted a senior transportation product: a book of 20 'ready ride' passes available at the senior center for $10, and he highlighted a June 12 health screening coordinated with Toro University and Sutter Health medical students running from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
