Recreation manager: lifeguard classes continue as city works to boost staffing

Georgia said the department will finish a third lifeguard training class this weekend with eight participants; those who want to work for the city will be interviewed following certification. "So we need 5 people in the class," Georgia said, explaining trainees rotate through rescuer and victim roles and five people are required to correctly staff exercises.
Georgia said first-year lifeguards start at the city minimum wage (around $16–$17 per hour this year), while senior lifeguard and pool manager positions can pay into the mid-$20s per hour. She reported strong adult lap swim participation, about 200 registrations for spring programs with some classes full and waitlists, and planning underway for Mayfair and other seasonal events.
Georgia said the department will offer another lifeguard training when at least five qualifying applicants are available and that aquatic facility-operator certification training is scheduled for staff in May.
