Witnesses and residents emphasized the importance of keeping the Deanwood replacement project moving (Travis Bally urged protecting the plan to replace a 7,300 sq ft facility with a 20,000 sq ft library). Gavilan also said the Southeast library is on track for a late‑summer opening but noted the FY27 operating budget lacks about $527,000 needed for custodial, security, and technology monitoring tied to the new site; without that operating impact funding, the library could open but “not at the level that we would have opened any other library.”
Gavilan said $9,000,000 in the proposed capital budget would allow negotiations for a long‑term lease at the Eckington/Edgewood site (described as a lifetime or 99‑year lease) and that the overall project budget for that site remains roughly $24,000,000.
