At the Pacific View Sessions, Thea Tochihara spoke about a long personal arc from studying psychology to full-time songwriting and performance. She described songwriting as a way to process life events, saying the music lets other people hear "an honest truth" and feel less alone.
"I was actually I had gotten a master's in psychology," Tochihara said, describing a career shift after personal upheaval that led her to pick up guitar and begin writing. She said she taught herself piano around age 12 or 13 and later turned poems into songs, calling the process "very spiritual." Thea said her writing has matured over roughly 12–13 years and often balances melancholy with a "silver lining."
