Residents urge Miami Lakes to restore senior classes as mayor proclaims Parks & Recreation Month

Mayor Joshua Dieguez opened the meeting by proclaiming July 2026 Parks and Recreation Month and recognized Parks & Recreation staff for recent playground and court upgrades. "Now, therefore, I, Joshua Dieguez...do hereby proclaim July 2026 as Parks and Recreation Month," the mayor read as the council presented the proclamation to parks staff.
Parks Director Jeremy Bagdown described parks as a “generational experience” and thanked staff for work on playground replacements and landscape stewardship. During public comment, several residents urged the council to act on an unrelated issue that emerged: the apparent cancellation of senior programming provided through Miami‑Dade County’s HML Senior Program. Lourdes Teja told the council that, “As of 06/26/2026, we have no exercise classes. The computer classes have been canceled, the sewing classes...we need these classes.” Director Bagdown said he had not received an official notice but had emailed the HML program manager for clarification and committed to coordinating with School Board member Robert Alonzo to seek funding.
Council asked staff to follow up and committed to advocacy with the county to protect senior programming, and thanked parks staff for their ongoing work. The proclamation recognizes park upgrades while council and staff pursue a county funding update for senior classes.
