Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety approves FY27 committee budget report and BSA recommendations

The Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety voted unanimously on May 22 to approve its fiscal year 2027 committee budget report and the committee's recommended Budget Support Act (BSA) print, sending both to the full Council. Chair Council Member Brooke Pinto moved the print with leave for staff to make technical and editorial conforming changes; the committee answered procedural questions and passed the measure by voice vote.
The vote followed an extensive overview by Chair Pinto of the committee's priorities and targeted restorations. Pinto emphasized three goals: interrupt cycles of violence, meet urgent public-safety needs and support the public-safety workforce, and bolster foundational community supports. "The report reflects the committee's commitment to safety, justice, and sustainable peace throughout all of our communities in the District of Columbia," Pinto said. The committee later reconvened a brief reconsideration so Council Member Anita Bonds could be recorded as voting and then re-approved the print unanimously.
