City staff reports 121 demolitions year-to-date, says work is steady but behind schedule

Steve Gondal, director for the Department of Planning, Neighborhoods and Development, briefed the commission on the city's demolition effort and structural nuisance list for June 2026. "In June we saw 24 demolitions, completed," Gondal said, and staff reported 121 demolitions completed year-to-date of 334 planned (about 36% of the total). He said 70 of the 120 ARPA-funded demolitions are finished and detailed the funding mix: ARPA, Ohio Department of Development (ODOD), and CDBG money supported the removals.
Gondal ran through neighborhood-level counts and said the program has added 33 debris piles this year; staff completed 68 post-abatement inspections in June to prepare properties for removal. He also described five emergency demolitions in June and identified the addresses and neighborhoods affected. Commissioners sought clarification on the causes of the emergency demolitions; Gondal said he would confirm the exact reasons but believed the June emergency cases were fire-related.
Commissioners asked for supplemental data on the number of nuisance-listed properties by neighborhood and how piles are being tracked and scheduled for removal. Gondal said staff would provide an updated chart that correlates properties on the nuisance list and those slated for demolition.
