The Ripley County Council voted 5–2 on May 18 to approve a proposed compensation package for a new Area Planning Director: a base salary of $80,000, five weeks of vacation and 12 sick days. The approval is contingent on interlocal agreements with Ripley County towns committing to contribute toward the salary for up to five years.
Steve Youngman of the Area & Planning Department summarized prior discussions with the council and introduced endorsements from local leaders. Support for the candidate was voiced by Deborah Shumate, Town of Milan board president; Doug Rumpke of the Ripley County Area Planning Board; and Doug Smith of the Ripley County Planning Commission. Councilman Stephanie Back moved the salary motion, which Andrew Decker seconded; the motion passed 5–2.
Council minutes record the salary and benefits requested by the candidate and the contingency requiring formal interlocal agreements. The item was discussed as part of new-business personnel considerations and will proceed once contribution agreements are in place.
