Wise County board to engage executive-search firm for county administrator recruitment

The Wise County Board of Supervisors agreed Aug. 6 to pursue hiring an executive-search firm, the Beckley Group, to assist in recruiting a county administrator. Chair, who opened the unfinished-business item on recruiting, said, “We still have not found a suitable applicant,” and recommended the board hire the Beckley Group and speak with its lead, Jose Williams, to determine scope and fees.
A committee member urged caution and asked that the headhunter appear before the board to explain their approach and credentials: “Let them come and convince us that we want to hire them,” the committee member said. The board discussed scheduling a virtual meeting and tentatively set Sept. 1–3 at 10:00 a.m. as possible dates for a teleconference presentation and interview process. The board recorded a motion and second to pursue those dates and to have the firm present virtually; the transcript shows a voice agreement but no recorded roll-call vote on a final contract in the meeting record.
The discussion included logistical considerations — timing for board members’ availability and whether meetings should be held morning or evening — and emphasized the need for the firm to define the county’s desired qualifications and a proposed fee schedule before any contract is executed.
