Commission recommends town pursue purchase of Salmon parcel despite active CREP contract

The Montgomery Conservation Commission on May 6 recommended that the Selectboard pursue steps for the Town to acquire the Salmon parcel, with the Vermont River Conservancy (VRC) and the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board (VHCB) to hold a conservation easement.
Remy Crettol of the Vermont River Conservancy told commissioners that "a conservation easement can be placed on land enrolled in CREP." Commissioners discussed two CREP options and agreed the Town should succeed to the existing CREP contract, accepting that contract restrictions would continue and that the town would receive no annual CREP rental payments until the contract expires in 2032. An appraisal on the parcel is expected by July 2026.
Joan Hildreth moved and Kip Potter seconded the recommendation; Cliff Loos abstained and the motion passed. The commission will ask the Selectboard to add the proposal to its agenda so Crettol can present details and field questions. If the Selectboard agrees to proceed, it would be asked to provide a letter of commitment supporting the acquisition.
