The Montgomery Planning Commission on May 12 continued work on a draft Short-Term Rental Registry ordinance and agreed to circulate a revised version to commissioners after incorporating attorney feedback and comparisons to a VLCT draft ordinance. Alissa Hardy said she had attempted multiple times to meet with two companies about the registry but had not been able to schedule a meeting; commissioners plan to circulate edits after this meeting and aim for a special meeting in late May if feasible, or else to continue the matter at the regular June meeting.
Members described the edits as incorporating counsel's suggestions and consulting the Vermont League of Cities and Towns (VLCT) draft ordinance as a model for procedural and enforcement language. Diane Sherman said the commission and staff will continue refining definitions and enforcement-related text before public release of the revised draft.
During public comment, residents urged the commission to consider multiple companies for monitoring short-term rentals and asked whether 'Daniel' should recuse himself from any vote on the ordinance because he operates short-term rentals. The commission did not take a formal vote on recusal during the meeting and instead noted the question for future consideration as the ordinance proceeds through revisions.
