Sedgwick County staff told the commission they plan to launch a public budget simulator on May 5 and keep it open for roughly three weeks as part of a first-year rollout to encourage broader citizen engagement in budgeting. Dr. Hua Guo, who helped design the tool for the county, said the pilot is intentionally iterative: "The plan to launch the simulation will be, on May 5. And we'll allow the simulation to run for, 3 weeks, just right before the Memorial weekend." Dr. Hua Guo presented the tool as a multi-year project that will be refined after public testing.
County staff said they will follow the public run with a post-simulation analysis and a report back to the commission in early June to compare citizen preferences with the county's recommended and adopted budgets. Staff emphasized the simulator is one part of a broader engagement strategy that may include live town halls and outreach to encourage traffic to the online tool.
