Village details Chatham Street sidewalk grant; construction likely summer 2027

The Village of Nassau reported it has secured a grant to upgrade sidewalks in the village center, including both sides of Chatham Street from Fairgrounds Street to Route 20 and replacement on Fairgrounds Street near the firehouse and Hope for Life Church. Chair (S1) said the project includes a crosswalk across the rail trail to the John Street sidewalk in front of the school and work to close some driveways near local businesses.
Chair told the board and audience the village's engineering consultant LaBerge will coordinate with the state Department of Transportation and a kickoff meeting will be scheduled; construction is not expected in summer 2026 but is anticipated in summer 2027. "Construction doesn't expect to be this summer, the summer of 26, but it will it will take place in the summer of 27 is what our anticipation is at this point," Chair said.
The board did not vote on contracting for construction at the meeting; the discussion focused on scope, right-of-way coordination with DOT, signage for a non-automated crosswalk and ensuring sidewalks connect to the school and library areas.
