Project SEARCH graduates recognized; county touts high intern-to-hire conversion

Commissioners recognized graduates of Project SEARCH, a county partnership that gives students with intellectual and developmental disabilities real-world work experience with county departments and local employers. Presenters highlighted recent interns' placements in the county print shop, grounds maintenance, jail facilities and partner employers and invited businesses to participate in a virtual reverse job fair ending May 2 to showcase candidates.
Program staff said the unemployment rate among individuals with disabilities is "shockingly high, somewhere around 70 percent," while Project SEARCH graduates typically achieve employment rates of roughly 70 percent. Commissioners praised the program and thanked USD 259 and partner employers for providing internships and potential job opportunities.
