Mayor announces local events; fire chief updates storm recovery; resident raises traffic-safety concerns; council holds closed session

Mayor Kevin Stork used the meeting’s other-business segment to remind residents of an upcoming "Rock the Block" performance by Matt Jordan on Aug. 22 and provided the Splash Pad contact number (618-946-8928) and remaining season hours through Sept. 13.
Fire Chief Keith Norman updated the council on storm-recovery efforts, saying FEMA and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency had visited and that residents affected by the storm were appreciative of City efforts. He said the City is waiting to learn whether the area qualifies for assistance and, if so, what assistance will be available.
During public comment, resident Ron Murphy described a June 19 traffic crash at Cross Street and County Road in which "a lady ran through stop sign on Cross Street which involved three (3) vehicles totaling his vehicle and thankfully no one was hurt." Murphy said the stop sign is clearly visible but that drivers repeatedly run it and he also complained about having to pay for the accident report through LexisNexis and delays in receiving the report.
The council then moved into closed session to discuss collective bargaining; the motion to enter closed session was made by Commissioner John Miles, seconded by Commissioner Anthony Steckel and approved by roll call with all voting aye. The council returned to open session on a subsequent motion and, with no action taken from closed session, moved to adjourn at 6:46 p.m.
