Conservation Advisory Council expands BearWise outreach; checklist to go to STR renewals

Beth Waterman, chair of the Conservation Advisory Council, reported that the CAC’s BearWise checklist is being mailed to short-term-rental owners who renew their permits, and described a successful tabling effort at the Phoenicia Farmers Market. "This bear wise checklist contains incredibly useful information," Waterman said, and the CAC plans to post BearWise resources on the town website and run follow-ups including workshops on electric fencing and DIY bear-proofing mats.
A CAC member summarized market feedback and said the DEC’s guidance on negative conditioning has been an important element in reducing habituated-bear interactions. The board thanked CAC volunteers and encouraged continued outreach; the CAC plans to track responses and reach out to restaurants, hotels and new short-term renters.
