Catskill Recreation Center asks Shandaken for funding support, cites regional benefits and a $40,000 utility surge

Pat Gonzales, a board member of the Catskill Recreation Center (CRC) and a registered nurse, presented the CRC’s programs and funding request and invited questions about membership and operations. "We are offering many wonderful programs...we have 700 members," Gonzales said, stressing the center’s role in regional wellness programming for Delaware and Ulster counties and its role training lifeguards used by nearby municipalities.
Gonzales and a co-presenter recounted a utility surge that damaged equipment and led to an unusually large billing spike — "it was like 1 month was a $40,000 electric bill," Gonzales said — and said they have pursued reimbursement and legal avenues, with some success. The CRC’s co-presenter emphasized the CRC’s economic-development value and asked the board to consider regional funding contributions that would help the center sustain programming and attract business and new residents.
Board members thanked the CRC and noted an application and letter on file. The CRC representatives left free day passes and paperwork for the board to review.
