Catskill Recreation Center asks Shandaken for operating support, cites regional benefits

Representatives from the Catskill Recreation Center told the town board the center serves Delaware and Ulster counties and provides programs from fall-prevention and self-defense classes to youth swimming and autism-friendly activities. "We are offering, many wonderful programs... We are asking for some funding tonight, to really talk about keeping our community healthy and keeping wellness front and center so we don't have to always go to the emergency room," CRC board member Pat Gonzales said.
CRC leaders emphasized the center’s regional economic value, saying local realtors highlight the CRC as an asset to businesses and potential new residents. The presenters said the center still faces financial strain from a previous NYSEG electricity surge that once generated a $40,000 bill for a single month and damaged equipment; they are pursuing reimbursement and asked the board to consider funding support while they continue regional fundraising efforts.
The CRC left the board an application and offered to answer questions about membership, usage and financials; presenters said membership was up to about 700 and they are running an "Access for All" program to increase local participation. Board members thanked the CRC for lifeguard training and said they would follow up on the center's application.
