Members discussed a range of bear‑deterrent tools and the practicalities of demonstrating them during public outreach.
Nicole Caputo said electric fences and solar battery packs work well for beekeepers and small properties. One member described maintaining a fence and the need to keep grass away from the lines. The meeting also covered ground-mounted electric mats and so‑called ‘critter gitter’ noise devices. A member cautioned that a live critter‑gitter demonstration should include a prior warning because "it's shocking" and may startle market visitors.
Committee members agreed to collect technical details (battery strength, voltage, maintenance needs) and to ask DEC to run an electric‑fence tutorial so residents can see how devices are grounded and used safely. The group noted that some deterrents require ongoing maintenance — for example, keeping vegetation from touching the fence — and that misuse can reduce effectiveness.
The committee will include clear do's and don'ts and maintenance tips in any public tutorial or handout, and to test/demo devices at a lower volume prior to a farmers‑market demonstration.
