Council told police contract outstrips property-tax revenue; STEP grant support declines

Treasurer Lori told Council that even with projected property-tax revenue, the city would still be well short of covering the police contract: "even our property taxes that we're bringing in does not pay for the police contract." She said staff will provide the police contract options and dollar figures when the chief presents the department’s budget in an upcoming workshop.
Council also discussed a STEP grant that subsidized a police position. Lori said the grant has been tapering and "we're only getting $25,000 this year," and Council acknowledged that after grant funding ends the city typically assumes the full cost of the position. The police department will present options (base and two alternatives) so Council can decide what level of service and cost to fund.
