"Friends of the Onancock School remains committed to establishing the historic Onancock School and the grounds as a vital, vibrant, and accessible community and cultural center," Baird said. She told council that FOS has invested more than $670,000 in maintenance, upkeep and improvements since 2007, reported operating revenues of about $140,000 in 2024 and operating expenses near $138,900, leaving net income of roughly $1,000 for operations.
Baird asked that the profit-and-loss statement, balance sheet, strategic plan and contractor estimates be included in the meeting packet and minutes and posted on the town website. Council members said staff would include the materials in the packet and make the full report available online. Baird also urged the council not to further delay a scheduled discussion of repair estimates; councilors agreed to add the topic to a future agenda and to circulate the submitted quotes to members.
Next steps: FOS requested a timely public review of the contractor estimates and asked the town to consider scheduling a follow-up discussion on awarding repair work, along with exploring independent engineering review before large expenditures.
