Council schedules safety committee to study e-bikes, scooters after two serious crashes reported

Chief Miller told the council the police department has seen a large increase in e-bikes, motor scooters and mini-bikes around the city and described two recent serious crashes that required trauma transports to Toledo hospitals. "We have been seeing a large increase of ebikes, motor scooters, mini bikes appearing throughout the city," Miller said, adding that some devices exceed state wattage recommendations and that state legislation to define these devices is still pending.
Acting Mayor Mary Westfall said the council would schedule a safety committee meeting to review model ordinances and local options; the committee was scheduled for July 6 at 5:30 p.m. Councilmembers discussed potential topics for the committee, including age limits, whether certain devices should be allowed on sidewalks, and examples of model ordinances from other Ohio communities.
