Sylvania resident urges council to study nonlethal deer-sterilization after 29 deer seen on private property

Robert "Bob" Lavelle, a Sylvania resident, told the council he has seen a rapid increase in deer on his property and urged action to reduce overbrowsing and human–wildlife conflict. "I counted 29 deer, a herd in my, quote, backyard last year," Lavelle said, describing multiple fawns this spring and a loss of ornamental plantings to deer browsing.
Lavelle described research into sterilization programs used elsewhere and said he spoke with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, which told him a city petition would be the local council's decision. "If the council feels ... sterilization is appropriate, then you would file a petition, and they would probably approve it," he said. Acting Mayor Mary Westfall said she would ask city administration to check whether similar requests have been made and to prepare material for a committee meeting so the council can consider nonlethal management options.
