Johnstown Council opens applications to fill Council Member‑at‑Large vacancy

The Johnstown Common Council on July 30 moved to begin the appointment process to fill a vacancy in the Council Member‑at‑Large seat after a resignation. Council Member Bradley Hayner moved the action, which was seconded by Council Member Vincent McCallum and passed on a 4‑0 vote with one member excused.
Mayor Amy Praught described the application process, saying, "Letters of interest and resumes will be accepted through August 7, 2026, submitted to the City Clerk." She added that, because of election law deadlines, "the appointed individual will serve from the date of appointment through December 31, 2026," and must run as a write‑in candidate in the November 2026 election to continue serving. The successful write‑in candidate would be sworn in Jan. 1, 2027, to serve the remainder of the unexpired term ending Dec. 31, 2029.
Applicants must be residents of the City of Johnstown, registered voters within the city, and otherwise qualified under the New York State Public Officers Law. The Council said it will accept submissions through the Aug. 7 deadline, then interview candidates and appoint a qualified individual to fill the vacancy. The vacancy notice will be posted on the city website, social media pages and distributed to local media outlets.
