The Hillsdale Town Board approved engineering plans to rehabilitate failing sewer absorption beds after the consulting engineer presented design revisions and a DEC wetlands clarification. Consultant George described new absorption fields, an on-site pump chamber and clay barriers between cells intended to increase separation from groundwater and improve longevity. "These are new absorption fields that will be constructed adjacent to the existing failing systems," he said.
Chair told the board the project was declared an emergency to meet DEC timing and cited an engineering estimate of about $477,000, noting highway-department assistance will reduce contractor costs. He also reported the sewer project has "500,000 plus 50 k of, grants" that are reimbursable by the state, and that the district currently shows about $80,000 net after factoring expected reimbursements and existing debt. The motion to approve engineering plans was seconded and passed on a unanimous "Aye" vote.
Board members discussed the DEC review: two DEC biologists confirmed a state wetland on the parcel and the agency indicated the town had not erred in prior mapping; DEC will allow certain work within the 100-foot adjacent area with conditions. The chair said the town will recommend contractors but will not run a full public procurement because of the emergency timeline.
