Council approves amended Nationals Ballpark lease, extends team presence and creates maintenance funding stream

Chair Phil Mendelson presented the Nationals Ballpark Amended and Restated Lease Emergency Declaration and the underlying Bill 20-6620, saying the legislation "provides for approval of an amended and restated lease agreement" consistent with the Ballpark Maintenance Act adopted in 2024 and will "keep the Nationals baseball club in the district through longer than the law requires."
Councilmembers praised the predictability the lease provides and noted it will create a dedicated stream of funding for modernization and upkeep through a ballpark maintenance fund created by the Ballpark Maintenance Act. Mendelson said technical amendments recommended by general counsel were accepted and the measure, including an amendment in the nature of a substitute, passed unanimously.
