The Sangerville Select Board approved a series of tax abatements during its Aug. 5 meeting and discussed how to handle a late veterans-exemption request without setting precedent.
Staff recommended and the board approved abatements for Kevin and Maya Jollicore related to a removed shed (total abatement roughly $400), and later approved abatements for Daryl and Shannon Spalding and for Cheryl Firth (Cheryl Firth abatement amount recorded as $1,120.94). When reviewing a veterans-exemption request for George Le Pen that missed the statutory filing deadline, staff recommended denying the late exemption to avoid precedent; the board voted to deny the formal exemption but several members pledged to cover the veteran's $82.92 tax savings among themselves rather than alter the official rules.
Board members cited the importance of following statutory deadlines and indicated the townspeople ultimately set policy. Staff will record abatements and proceed with notices as required.
