Council allocates roughly $470,000 to sewer repairs on West 210th during resurfacing project

The Fairview Park City Council approved Ordinance 26-45 on June 29, authorizing the mayor to enter a contract for sewer improvements on West 210th Street and allocating roughly $470,000 of the budget savings toward sewer lateral repairs and related work.

Staff said the project had a $2,000,000 budget and that bids came in lower than budgeted; staff proposed using the difference—approximately $470,000—for sewer work while the resurfacing contract is active so the city would not have to reopen newly paved sections. "We were budgeted for and approved for $2,000,000, and the bids came in for less money than that. So we just took the difference for the 470,000 to put towards sewer work," said Megan Otter, assistant development director.

Engineering staff reported identification of roughly nine to ten lateral locations that may need replacement and that they had an initial estimate from a contractor (verbatim in the meeting transcript) and are soliciting additional quotes to try to reduce costs. Council discussed whether the lateral issues could be tied to past lead-pipe work and were told they did not appear to overlap with lead line locations. Staff and engineers emphasized televising and investigating mains and laterals and coordinating repairs so final full-depth concrete repairs occur before final surfacing to avoid additional road work. The ordinance passed by roll call vote of the members present.
