South Burlington board plans separate local bond ballot alongside Aug. 11 primary, weighing tabulators vs. hand count

Holly told members the August primary is scheduled for Aug. 11 and that the city needs a separate local bond election on the same day but on a separate ballot. "So the August primary is coming, August 11, and the city has, decided that in addition to that, we need to do to the local bonds, election," Holly said, explaining the bond cannot be combined on the same machine ballot and will require a distinct process.
Board members discussed using tabulators for federal ballots while conducting a hand count for the local bond, with proposals for color-coded local ballots and a separate local-ballot box positioned beside the tabulator. One participant noted the cost tradeoff: "I mean, there's it's, like, 30¢ a ballot for them to create the ballot and to be read by the machines," raising the question whether machine-read ballots' production costs justify faster counting.
